Have you ever seen yourself in a video only to wish you had never worn that shirt, or that style or color on camera?? If so, I feel your pain. When I first started appearing in videos and commercials, I groaned each time I saw myself in a white blouse or a certain pattern. I learned quickly from the gals in wardrobe what worked for my body on camera, and I stick to those colors and shapes, regardless of trends. If you’re going to be on camera or in a video for your growing business, here are some valuable tips to consider when pulling your look together:

As a rule, opt for something simple and avoid anything sloppy. When choosing colors, whether you’re going for a casual or formal look, wear solid and saturated tones. Some might argue that jewel tones come across better on camera, but I’ve worn my share of pale blues and greens in videos and they looked great. Rich, solid colors pop on a small computer screen, stand out against any background, and flatter skin tones. Except green. I wear green all the time (its one of my best colors), but not in front of a green screen. Your body will be invisible. The same goes for most any backdrop. If you are being interviewed in front of a black or white wall, don’t wear black or white or you’ll risk looking like a floating head. Also, white often makes you glow making you look like you just arrived from heaven. But if that’s the look you’re wanting, then go for it. Find out what colors look best on you. If you don’t know, find out! Ask others or Google it.

A word on patterns: Reconsider if you were thinking of wearing checked, thin stripes, or herringbone. This includes ties. Sometimes video can’t accurately capture designs like this. You’ll risk looking like you’re vibrating on camera.


If you’re gonna wear a suit, make it a well-cut one. Otherwise your viewers will be distracted by your ill-fitting suit instead of listening to your message. When you know better, you do better.

Casual shirts can work, but skip white, gray, or light brown. You’ll either glow or be too boring to watch. A T-Shirt is fine if you’re a dude or doing home repairs, but go for a collared shirt if you’re an entrepreneur or business owner.

If you typically wear a uniform at work and you’re representing your company on camera, then wear your uniform. Its okay to play the part.


When in doubt, play it safe. You can be amazing in the simplest outfit.

Avoid the froufrou. Don’t distract the viewers with scarves, extra necklaces or fluffy collars. Do you want them wondering how you tied your scarf or listening to what you have to say? It happens all the time.

V-necks and scoop-necks are good choices for most everyone. And unless you have great arms, wear sleeves. I have great arms, but sometimes they still look flabby in video.

If you want to be taken seriously, wear a jacket. If you want to add personality, try a richly colored blouse underneath.

Always wear earrings. They pull the look together. Simple and stylish is best. Avoid the long dangly ones unless you work in a creative industry.


If you’re going to be on camera a lot, think about cultivating YOUR look. A signature look, or brand, makes you instantly recognizable. And that’s a good thing.
